Growth in the New Year

What a whirlwind 2016 was.  Part of me doesn't know how we got here.  As I sit from my new office space in the loft of a tax & accounting office (hallelujah, I have people in my corner helping me with these things now) and reflect back on the past year, so much has changed.  I resigned from a job that I loved to pursue photography full time.  I wanted more time with my family and I wanted the opportunity to create the ideal career I had envisioned in my head.  Through all the trials of the past year, the self doubt, the hard drive malfunctions, the sleepless nights (I have a 14 month old who still doesn't understand the value of a full night of sleep), I was able to sit back and reflect on where I came from and where I'm going, and it is all good.  Today I made a list of goals for 2017.  There are more personal goals than there are business goals, which was a pretty amazing thing for me to see. hello2017

Sure I have business goals....  But they are doable.  Two of them are already checked off my list and it's only January... and I'm actively working toward checking of a few more within the next few months.  Which is pretty awesome.  I exceeded my booking goal this year.  I get to head to Seattle in August for a wedding that will surely be nothing short of amazing.  I honestly couldn't be more excited about.... anything.  I have wanted to see the Pacific Northwest for as long as I can remember and this is basically a dream come true for me.  I get emotional just thinking about it!

  • book 25 weddings in 2018
  • book one wedding per year out of state
  • create a part time >> full time position for Megan
  • become more efficient with editing
  • build instagram
  • completely overhaul my file management system/storage/backup
  • be 100% to my clients; meet/exceed deadlines

My personal goals are what struck me...

  • be more present with my children
  • spend more time outside (all seasons)
  • eat healthy (without being afraid to eat my clients wedding cake when time allows - haha!)
  • exercise // get in shape
  • travel more - see the US
  • do a daily devotional
  • less of 'me' and more for others
  • limit social media/technology (non work related)
  • show myself & others Grace
  • be diligent about saving and budgeting
  • clear out the clutter // simplify

These sound so simple right?  But they are seriously the goals that are most important to me.  More important than being a social media guru.  More important than booking dream weddings across the US.  Far more important than making 6 figures (this isn't a goal of mine at all, actually haha).  I just want to enjoy the simple life.  The funny part is, these goals are pretty similar to my personal goals from last year.  Meaning, I didn't do so great at achieving these.  Fortunately, I have the opportunity literally at my finger tips to do that, at the start of a new year.  There is not a day that goes by that I don't consider what I'm able to do a blessing from God, and I am so, so grateful.  It has brought me to my knees several times this year and it's bringing me to my knees now.   I can use my gifts/talents to their fullest, not watered down by someone else's idea of how I should use them.  So, thank you.  If you're a past client, present client or future client, Thank you, from the bottom of my heart.  It's because of you and your belief in me that I get to not only provide for my family but have the opportunity to craft the life I want for them.  And while I definitely don't have it all figured out, I learned a lot this past year.  And I'm pretty excited for 2017!

Some inspiration for my personal goals.... my favorite files from my personal archives from 2016. 685A7670685A1215NDP_0098685A7638

Asher Fritz | A newborn family session

One of the things I love about doing newborn sessions in/at a client's home is the reality of it all.  There are no fancy props or elaborate setups, we simply use what they have and everything about the photos is meaningful.  Everyone is more comfortable in general, and I'm also able to connect with older siblings in a way that just wouldn't be possible for me in a studio setting. Sometimes I have a lack of words to accurately describe things, and this family's bond is just one of those things.  I told Sandy after their session that I just loved culling through these images.... her family just has 'it'.   Each family I work with is unique and there are lots of things that work for each of us.  With that said, this family has a special little spark.  I don't know exactly how to explain it, but I do know that it's very rare.

Letteer Family | Lifestyle Children's Portraits

I love chasing little ones around and letting them be themselves during a session.  It's so much more my style and it's a win win in my opinion... as a parent you get realistic photos that speak to your children's personalities and your children are actually willing to tolerate it (for the most part)! I consider my family portrait sessions lifestyle portraiture because the overly posed shots are probably not what my clients come to me for.  In fact, if a client really wants a lot of 'perfection' like that, I likely refer them to someone who is much more skilled in that area than I could ever pretend or want to be.  Yes, I will try to get a nice picture of your children sitting together and smiling (see below), but I will tell you, more often than not we get about one of those if we are lucky.  For the remainder of the session, I love focusing on how your children interact and the phase that they are in now.  That might mean playing tag, that might mean singing, that might mean a lot of things.  It might not be perfect to everyone but it's definitely perfect to me, and I hope it's perfect for all of the Mommas and Dads and grandparents that are able to cherish real photos of their children filled with joy!

Baby Braxton | Lifestyle Newborn Photography

While I do think a baby wrapped in a sweet basket is adorable and perfectly sweet, there is so much more to the first days of life than that for me.  So. Much. More.  Sometimes there are tears, sometimes there are siblings, sometimes there are tired eyes and gentle touches and laughter and kisses.  For me, it's not all about what's cute, it's about what's real and it's about remembering this phase right now.  Because I can guarantee from personal experience that even though it seems like it's dragging on some days, when you have a 6 year old it's hard to remember what life was like in those first few hours and days.  Nearly impossible.  And I can almost guarantee that even though you never thought you'd miss that phase of getting up every hour, you will.   This is why I love shooting in clients and friend's homes, showing the love and the crazy and providing them with something worth more than a sweet baby in a cute basket.  There is so much more to life than that.   That's why I love lifestyle newborn photography and lifestyle family photography. I'm so, so happy to have had the opportunity to visit my dear friend leading up to the arrival of her son to get some shots of her late in her pregnancy with her daughter Madelyn, and again about a week after baby Braxton entered their lives!  I feel so blessed to be able to watch my life long friends start families of their own and see their children grow and document that for them.  It's one of the best feelings to see my photos hanging on their walls.  Congratulations Alli and Kolby... you have the most perfect little angels!

I don't currently shoot many newborn sessions.  I do love Lifestyle newborn photography, however, and I think it's really a perfect fit for me as a photographer and a person in terms of newborn portrait options.  Though I have been referring most newborn sessions elsewhere for the past few months due to schedule constraints, I do take them on when my schedule allows, but I recommend tentatively booking them between 3-6 months out from your due date.  I am currently scheduling very limited newborn/family sessions for the winter months, once I return from my own maternity leave in January.

Three Brothers | Bloomsburg Family Portrait Session

Boys can be tough.  They can have tough exteriors, tough personalities, and they can be tough to photograph.  This was my second year with the May family and their three boys, who love trucks and mud and playing rough.  You can tell by their 'hugs' which may or may not resemble some type of choke hold that these boys mean business, and I have absolutely loved seeing how much they've grown this past year!  Perhaps it's because I have a rough and tumble boy of my own, but I love the spirit of these three and hope to see them again in the future!  Their Mother Megan always chooses awesome locations where the boys can sort of 'let loose' and we can just capture things how they unfold, which is exactly what we did at the Rupert bridge for this Bloomsburg family portrait session.  Enjoy!
